During the past year, a program called Urban Roots, a branch of Youth Launch--a non-profit youth organization--has been transporting youth volunteers by bus to a farm in East Austin, Texas. Twice a week, more than a dozen East Austin high school students board the bus to the farm, where they pull weeds, harvest crops, and wash vegetables.
Sixty percent of the students' harvest is sold to local restaurants and markets, and the remaining 40 percent is donated to East Austin's food pantries and soup kitchens.
