In the July 7 Inside Track item "Gingrich Issues Curious Comments About Terrorist Attacks," the author obtusely distorts Gingrich's statements, making it seem as if he wished for another terrorist attack. The accusation is absurd.
Gingrich was making a profound point about the difficulty of fighting terrorism in a free society, that the more successful the government is at stopping terrorist acts, the more difficult it is for it to justify the level of intensity needed to continue that success.
Gingrich used the obviously abhorrent possibility of the government allowing a terrorist attack to remind us of the threat as an illustration of the predicament we face.
This does not mean Gingrich suggested it would be good for the nation to endure a reminder terrorist attack, as the authors claim. Quite the opposite. It means Gingrich believes it would be good for ...
