TAIPEI, Aug 1 Asia Pulse - Despite the recent collapse of World Trade Organization (WTO) Doha Round talks, the future of Taiwan's international trade relations remains optimistic, as the improved cross-Taiwan Strait relations will help Taiwan gain more ground in multilateral and bilateral trade talks, a top Taiwanese trade negotiator said Thursday.

WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy admitted July 29 that the recent Doha Round talks had collapsed, as trade ministers representing more than 30 WTO member states failed to overcome divisions after nine days of talks in Geneva, with the core areas being subsidies and import tariffs related to agricultural and industrial products.

The collapse raised domestic concern about the future of Taiwan's international trade relations, as the island might face marginalization in world trade because of the obstacles it often encounters in its efforts to forge free trade agreements (FTAs) with other nations.

At a Thursday press meeting, the Taiwanese trade negotiator downplayed such a possibility, saying that the improved cross-strait relations should help Taiwan explore trade talks multilaterally as well as bilaterally.
