I didn't do such a good job as my brother's keeper.
He died very suddenly and unexpectedly at his California home last month on June 7, the day after my birthday. He'd just emailed me a Happy Birthday note, chatting about his latest plan to rid the backyard of gophers so he could plant his garden, but the weeds were taking over and maybe it was too late this year?
Busy celebrating my birthday, I didn't get back to him until after the weekend, too late.
His demons
He is my big brother and I love him, but I couldn't keep him from his demons.
* He'd inherited the family "saver" gene in full force. The only thing saving him from being totally overrun with "good stuff" was that most California houses don't have basements--to fill up--like they do in the Midwest. But they do have double garages and sheds, and so did he.
