Do you have the right stuff to be a leader? Being socialized to follow, many women wait to be tapped as leaders instead of identifying themselves as potential leaders. Here's one way to do a gut check on yourself as a leader.
For the following characteristics, consider how often you display them. If it's often, give yourself two points. Sometimes earns one point and if it's never, just make a note of them to look back at later.
When you're a part of a group or working with students, do you find yourself exhibiting sensitivity, kindness and consideration? Encouraging others to grow? Bringing positive energy to your projects? Praising others in public? Generally making others feel valued and assuring that everyone's talents can work toward a common goal?

On a more personal level, do you try to take risks? Seek out opportunity? Handle adversity with grace? Express your desires and needs? Set a high standard of personal conduct? Possess a strong work ethic? Do you build upon your personal strengths?
In your day-to-day life, do you read for pleasure and self-improvement? Exercise? Dress appropriately for the setting? Count your blessings? If someone were to describe you, would your traits include having a sense of humor, modesty, optimism and playfulness? Would you be described as being trustworthy? Honest? Respectful? Respected?
If you scored high in these areas, you just may have the ZING! of leadership potential that women need in today's higher education workplace.
