Compared with physicians, lawyers and academics, women in academia are least likely to be parents, a new study shows.
The authors of the study, "Alone in the Ivory Tower: How Birth Events Vary Among Fast-Track Professionals," examined census data to track having a child age zero or one among the three professional groups. They found that female academics are 41% less likely than female physicians to have a baby in the household, and male academics are 21% less likely than their male M.D. counterparts.
Experts point to pay discrepancy and child care needs as reasons for the gaps. Male M.D.s are almost twice as likely to have stay-at-home wives.
