A professor at Calvin College MI left the school after not being allowed to attend the church of her choice.
Denise Isom sought an exception to Calvin's rule that faculty must attend a church affiliated with the Christian Reformed church. As a black woman, she tried some CRC churches, but felt more comfortable in the predominantly black Messiah Missionary Baptist Church.
Two other Calvin professors have quit over it, totaling one-sixth of the full-time education department faculty.
Calvin College officials noted that they offered Isom a deal that would have allowed her to have dual memberships in her Baptist church, as well as a CRC. The agreement would have Isom meeting regularly with a CRC pastor, with the pastor reporting on her progress.
