WASHINGTON -- Nearly half of the Unique Physician/Practitioner Identification Numbers in the Medicare program are either no longer in use or have never been used, according to a report from the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General.
"We recognize that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has made an effort to improve the completeness and accuracy of the UPIN Registry," the report's authors wrote. "However, the findings of our report demonstrate that the information housed in the UPIN Registry continues to be inaccurate.... When information housed in this Registry is unreliable, CMS's oversight functions may become less effective."
Researchers looked at a sample of 500 UPINs and asked the providers to verify the information contained in the database for each of their active practice settings. They also reviewed all active UPIN database records to identify inconsistent, missing, and questionable information.
