LAS VEGAS -- Warming and wetting C[O.sub.2] gas for laparoscopy reduced peritoneal inflammation as measured by C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 levels, compared with unmodified gas in a study of 52 patients.
Previous studies have shown that warming and humidifying C[O.sub.2] before insufflating a patient's abdomen reduces intraoperative hypothermia, referred shoulder tip pain, and postoperative recovery times. Even without modifying the gas, laparoscopy results in a less acute inflammatory response than does open surgery, Dr. Douglas Ott said in a poster presentation at an international congress of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.
