PALM BEACH, FLA. -- Circulating thyroid antibodies are not associated with previous fetal loss, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Thyroid Association.

Previous researchers associated recurrent fetal loss with presence of antiphospholipid and anticardiolipin antibodies. Other studies suggested a connection between spontaneous abortion / miscarriage and thyroid autoimmunity.

"We studied a great cohort of pregnant women to see if there was any influence of thyroid autoimmunity in spontaneous abortion," Dr. Mario Vaisman said.

He and his colleagues measured circulating thyroid peroxidase antibody levels assessed in 594 pregnant women with and without a history of fetal loss.
