Most studies done on hormone replacement have condemned estrogen with or without progestin as a major cause of adverse effects in postmenopausal women who have used oral estrogen ("Studies Confirm Adverse Effects of Combination HRT," Sept. 15, 2003, p. 1).
The major circulating estrogens are 17[beta]-estradiol in premenopausal women and estrone in postmenopausal women. The majority of studies, including the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), have been based on oral estrogen. When estrogen, regardless of type, is taken orally, it is converted into estrone by the liver.
