Boucher and Chardin.(Report from Europe)(Francois Boucher, Jean Simeon Chardin)(Brief article)
French eighteenth-century paintings frequently tell a story or comment on manners and behavior. The pictures of both Francois Boucher and Jean Simeon Chardin, for example, illuminate aspects of social history by showing women in their private worlds. In these works, fashions fairly new to Europe, such as drinking tea and the taste for chinoiserie, give insight into social and cultural life. Chardin, especially, chose to paint small still lifes and humble domestic scenes that mimic seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish cabinet pictures, in which collectors showed a growing interest.
