Doctors, lawyers, and accountants don't worry much about fallback careers, but even the most ambitious actors and rock stars consider other options. At a Gotham magazine lunch in Los Angeles, a benefit for breast cancer research at Saks Fifth Avenue, and backstage at the New York fashion shows, we asked celebrities what they would do if they hadn't gotten their big break.
Several stars had a vague Plan B--along with plans C, D, and E. "I'd like to think that I'd be a teacher," said Anne Hathaway. "But I'd probably be a nanny or a makeup artist. Maybe I'd be a shepherd. Who knows?" Mandy Moore pointed out that most people her age haven't yet figured out their careers: "I'm only 23," she said. "I'd be one of those undecided folks." A few actors said their current job allowed them to explore the alternatives. "I would be a lot of things," said Olivia Wilde. "That's why I'm an actress--to have several lives."
