A little texture and some unexpected twists take the classic low ponytail to entirely new heights.
We can't keep up with the constant reinvention of the iPod, but the newest versions of the ponytail are so appealing, there's no way they'll be obsolete in six months. "You can make ponytails so much more interesting by teasing them, deliberately messing them up, pulling pieces out in the front, and using barrettes and bobby pins," says hairstylist Garren of the Garren New York salon in New York City, who created the looks on these pages. "It does require a little effort, but they look much fresher." The latest styles are loosely gathered, placed low, and a bit tousled. "When pulled-back hair is a little roughed-up, it appears softer, younger, and more romantic," says hairstylist Guido. "Women don't want uptight hair in the summer. It's about feeling relaxed and carefree." And that's an idea that never goes out of style.
