An Interview With Melissa Biggs Bradley
Biggs Bradley is the founder and editor of indagare.com, a membership-based luxury-travel website.
When you're shopping for a hotel, look beyond the hype. There's a new hotel in Los Angeles by a well-known designer that's beautiful, but there's no getting around the fact that the building has thin walls and low ceilings. You don't want to discover that kind of thing when you check in.
Location, location, location. Look for a hotel that suits the purpose of your trip. Do you want to be near the beach or restaurants and nightlife? If you want to go to the theater in London, find a hotel in the West End, or you'll end up spending all of your time in a taxi.
Be wary. I'm a big believer in word-of-mouth recommendations--ask friends, read magazines, and browse online. When you look at the hotel's website, ask yourself what's missing: If it's a beach resort with no pictures of the beach, that's a red flag. Brand-new hotels often have kinks to work out, but if uneven service doesn't scare you, they usually offer good discounts.
