An Interview With Michael Thompson

Thompson is a New York--based photographer who shoots frequently for allure, W, and Vanity Fair.

It used to be such a bummer to get back from vacation and find your pictures were overexposed or people's heads were cut off. Digital cameras mean you can instantly find out if your images are any good--but they won't guarantee better pictures.

Make a composition. Photographers talk about making sure an image is "well-balanced." That means your eye isn't drawn to one corner only and there are interesting things in all parts of the picture. If you're taking a group shot, for instance, divide the people so they are spread evenly around the camera's screen and the tallest people are either in the center or on the edges of the group, not clustered to one side. Get the adults in position first, and just before you're ready to shoot, bring in the kids.
