True sirens are a bewitching lot, causing men to go to war and give up their thrones (and certainly relinquish their dignity). Everyone's heard of the thousand ships launched by Helen of Troy's face; here's a look at the lesser-known numbers about history's great sirens.

8th: Century B.C. in which Homer's The Odyssey featured two mythical singing creatures who try to lure the hero to dash his ship on their cliffs.

1981: Year the character Siryn, a beautiful red-haired mutant whose "sonic scream" can deafen enemies, first appeared in an issue of Marvel Comics' Spider-Woman.

75: Year A.D. Plutarch wrote of Cleopatra: "Her actual beauty...was not so remarkable that none could be compared with her, or that no one could see her without being struck by it, but...the character that attended all she said or did was something bewitching."

2007: Year in which a silver coin depicting Cleopatra with a shallow forehead, a long nose, narrow lips, and a pointy chin was exhibited.

$1 million: Amount Elizabeth Taylor was paid to play Cleopatra in 1963, becoming the first actress to earn a seven-figure paycheck for a single film.
