China joins the innovation greats

China has almost doubled the number of patents it has filed annually during the course of the last five years, according to a report from Thomson Reuters' scientific business.
The World IP Today report on global patent activity in 2007 analyses data mined from the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI).
Among its findings are that the number of patents filed globally continued to grow in 2007.
Although Japan is still the world leader, with 500,000 patents filed last year, its lead over the US and China is declining.
The highest proportion of academic innovations are made in China and Russia, where they represent nearly 25% of total patent activity.
