But does it wipe the floor with Wikipedia?
An encylopaedia written by academics must be better than one written by the crowd, mustn't it? Kim Thomas takes a look
' website review
Views on Wikipedia tend to fall into two camps: those who think an encyclopaedia written by amateurs will be full of inaccuracies, distortion and score-settling; and those who believe that it enshrines the principle of the wisdom of crowds because it is open to all, and mistakes are easily and quickly corrected.
Wikipedia sceptics will turn gratefully towards the Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology Online. Written by academic sociologists, it describes itself as "a vast library giving instant access to the most authoritative and up-to-date scholarship in your field".
First made available in January 2007, it is updated three times a year. And with 1,800 entries totalling 3.5 million words, it is a substantial piece of work.
