A topical cream containing glucosamine and chondroitin relieved pain in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, said Marc M. Cohen and his colleagues at Monash University, Clayton, Australia.
Since oral glucosamine is subject to degradation by the liver, the researchers hypothesized that topical administration would have greater bioavailability.
In a randomized trial, 32 patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) applied as needed the topical cream containing glucosamine sulfate 30 mg/g, chondroitin sulfate 50 mg/g, shark cartilage 140 mg/g, camphor, and peppermint oil.
Another 29 patients used a placebo cream that contained a small amount of peppermint oil to smell like the active cream.
After 4 weeks of therapy, visual analog scale pain scores in the test group decreased from 6.1 cm at baseline to 3.5 cm, while the placebo group scores decreased from 6.2 cm to 4.8 cm.
