NEW ORLEANS -- The two-rod levonorgestrel contraceptive implant Jadelle is almost identical to Norplant in terms of efficacy and side effects, but it's easier to remove than the six-rod device, Dr. Livia Wan said.
In fact, removal of the Jadelle device, which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration but is not yet marketed in the United States, took an average of just 4.5 minutes in a recent study While Norplant removals can take up to half an hour, she said at the annual meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
The study funded by the Population Council, a nonprofit organization, included 249 women over 10 years for a total of 823 woman-years, said Dr. Wan of New York University, New York.
The failure rate of Jadelle was 0.24 per 100 woman-years-with two pregnancies reported in the study period.
