In Illinois, as in many other states, if someone is killed committing a crime (usually during the commission of a felony), any co-conspirators in the crime may be charged with murder for the death, even if they did not kill the person themselves. Such a scenario is now playing out in Ogle County, Illinois, after a shooting death in the rural town of Stillman Valley on April 6. Three youths--18-year-old Cody Moore, 16-year-old Nathan Whitmire, and 15-year-old Justin Doyle--have all been charged with first-degree murder for the death of 14-year-old Travis Castle.
Castle was killed when Moore drove him and his compatriots to a Stillman Valley house to steal guns that Moore knew were there. Moore believed that the house would be empty because he knew that its owner was hospitalized. Moore stayed in the vehicle while the other three entered the house.
