Tehran's nuclear and regional ambitions present the Western powers and their Sunni Arab allies with a big challenge. Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei on May 4 said his nation would not bow to pressure after Western powers on May 2 announced they would offer a new package of incentives to coax Tehran to give up its nuclear programme.
Khamenei, who has the final word on state matters, did not refer directly to the country's nuclear programme. But on May 4 the Iranian Foreign Ministry rejected the May 2 offer. And Khamenei's comments seemed to suggest Iran was not willing to compromise.
During a speech in Fars Province, Khamenei said: "Have you not tested the Iranian nation? We will forcefully continue on our path and will not allow the oppressors to step on our rights". He said economic sanctions could not affect the nation's will. He was referring to action from the UN Security Council (UNSC), which ordered a third set of sanctions against Iran in March.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and senior officials from Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany met in London on May 2 and said they would offer a new package of incentives to Iran in an effort to persuade it to abandon its uranium-enrichment programme....
