BRISBANE, July 1 Asia Pulse - Australia is on the brink of reclaiming its native nut.
Queensland-based Buderim Ginger Ltd (ASX:BUG) is looking to become one of the world's largest producers of macadamia nuts after entering the first stages of acquiring a leading US nut producer.
According to the Australian National University (ANU), macadamias are native to the subtropical rainforests of Australia's east coast.
The ANU says "an enterprising group of horticulturists from America" picked up on the nut during a visit in the early 1900s, leading to Hawaii's volcanic slopes becoming the world's largest production region.
Buderin Ginger has signed a non-binding letter of intent to acquire all of the assets of MacFarms of Hawaii, and to lease a 3,903 acre macadamia orchard owned by Kapua Orchard Estates, an affiliate of MacFarms.
The proposed transaction is subject to completion of due diligence, the satisfactory negotiation of a definitive sale and purchase agreement, and finance approval.
