"Billy Pierce," said Al Lopez, "belongs in the Hall of Fame. He was a good pitcher. He had control, and he had good movement on his fastball."
Lopez, who turns 95 in August, had welcomed me to his home in Tampa, Florida and was reminiscing about the old days when he had managed two American League pennant-winners: the 1954 Cleveland Indians and 1959 Chicago White Sox.
Both those clubs were strong in pitching, and although Pierce had an off year (14-15) in 1959, he deserves a plaque in Cooperstown, according to Lopez. He had two 20-win seasons ...
