In George Vass's article on "sparkplug players" (May Baseball Digest), there was one player he failed to mention: shortstop Johnny Logan of the Milwaukee Braves.
Logan was a fiery type of player, hardnosed, and he did whatever he had to do to spark his club, including getting into brawls with the opposition.
He did not have much range, but he knew how to position himself for each hitter. He did not have a strong throwing arm, but he compensated with a quick release.
Logan was an excellent hit-and-run man. He usually batted second. He was also an excellent bunter. Teammate Del Crandall once wrote me that Logan was as good a clutch hitter as anybody on the Braves.
Johnny encompassed all the attributes of a winning player, but he always played in the background on the Braves who included Hall of Famers like Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews and Warren Spahn.
He did play on four All-Star teams, so he received some recognition as a very good player.
