Michael Thurman of Augusta, Georgia, may face charges for shooting 19-year-old Jeffrey Whitt after Whitt had broken into Thurman's truck on January 27 outside his house. The local D.A.'s office is investigating to determine whether to pursue charges against Thurman. Georgia does not have a law like Texas allowing homeowners to shoot to stop property thieves. To shoot in Georgia, one must be in fear of one's life.
A motion detector alerted Thurman to a man rummaging through his truck. Thurman grabbed a gun, ran downstairs in his T-shirt and underwear, and called, "Hey, what are you doing?" Whitt then ran to "a dark part of the yard," reported WRDW Channel 12. The odd flight direction gave Thurman the idea that Whitt might be retrieving a weapon, so Thurman shot three times, hitting Whitt in the leg.
