In March 2005, the College Board added a writing portion to the SAT to satisfy critics claiming the standardized test was biased against women, since women generally do better in writing than men. As it turns out, the writing is the best predictor of first-year student grades in the whole test!
Two studies found the new writing portion better predicts the academic future of freshmen students than the traditional mathematics, science and critical reading sections, though some schools still make the writing section optional.
