(Ischemia Technologies Inc.)
A biochemical test for use as an adjunct to the electrocardiogram and troponin blood test, to rule out MI in patients presenting to the emergency department with chest pain. The first blood test approved for evaluating acute coronary events since 1994, when the troponin test was approved.
* Recommended Usage: The test entails adding a cobalt solution to the blood sample, processed on a chemistry analyzer commonly available in hospital labs, providing results in about 10 minutes.
* Special Considerations: Currently available only at the clinical trial centers, the test will be introduced gradually to hospitals nationwide over the next year. Not approved for a "rule-in" claim.
* Comment: By detecting the amount of cobalt bound to serum albumin, the test measures "ischemia-modified albumin." Such albumin has impaired binding to heavy metals such as cobalt because of damage that occurs at an early stage during myocardial ischemia, resulting in increased levels of free cobalt.
In a study of more than 200 patients at high risk for MI presenting to an emergency department with chest pain, physicians were 70% accurate in ruling out an MI when using the ACB test with ECG and troponin ...
