Michigan's Supreme Court has ruled that because of a constitutional amendment, state governments and universities cannot offer health insurance benefits to same-sex partners of government employees. Michigan voted to ban gay marriage back in 2004.
In Michigan, at least 375 gay couples are covered under benefit policies at some 20 public universities, community colleges, school districts and local governments. This ruling jeopardizes domestic-partner policies for the University of Michigan faculty and public school workers.
