The National Academy of Science has added 72 new members this year, including 16 women. Last year only 9 of the 75 new members were women, compared with 19 in 2005.
The predominately white male Academy claims it's working towards inducting more qualified candidates who are women or minorities underrepresented in science.
Being elected to the NAS is a high honor for American scientists, as it advises policy makers in Congress on matters involving science and technology. New members are elected by the current 2,041 members of the Academy, most of whom are at universities.
