In December 2003, four former University of California-Davis female wrestlers sued the school, claiming sexual bias under Title IX for being cut from the team.
With no women's team, they had wrestled against other women as part of the men's team under former coach Michael Burch. But when UC-Davis failed to renew Burch's contract, new coach Lennie Zalesky required all wrestlers--male and female--to try out together. None of the four females made the team.
U.S. District Judge Frank C. Damrell Jr. recently dismissed the women's case on procedural grounds, saying the plaintiffs had not notified the university that they were taking action against the Intercollegiate Athletics program. He didn't comment on the merits of the case.
"The women weren't interested in participating against men" but against women, said Noreen Farrell, their attorney and a member of Equal Rights Advocates. Farrell claimed the new tryout policy was biased: ...
