Hathaway's transition a few years ago from teen queen ( The Princess Diaries ) to full-blown actress (in movies with--shocking!--nudity) was seen as too abrupt by some. In fashion, the metamorphosis was seamless. She carries off a couture gown (complete with train) with as much ease as she does a short tank dress. While other young actresses live in leggings and hoodies when off-duty, Hathaway's brand of casual is more formal: jeans and a graphic T-shirt with heels and a blazer. But the very next day, the Get Smart star goes full-on bombshell with an arresting red gown and tight French twist, looking like Hollywood royalty, not high-school prom queen. Hathaway doesn't choose between sweetness and sexiness but combines the two ideas in one look, wearing soft makeup and hair with a sharp bustier dress. Pushed-up sleeves give a trench a relaxed touch, while a filmy white dress looks grown-up thanks to gold high heels.

There's something sexy yet retro about open-toe shoes--and Hathaway knows how to work that angle.
