Mariah-fied

I loved the Mariah Carey cover story ["Waiting to Exhale," April]. She always looks so beautiful and happy. Mariah is talented, funny, and down-to-earth. I met her when I was in a wheelchair, and she treated me with respect and dignity. I will never forget her for that. Your story did her justice. We all want to be Mariah and become the girl who had one shoe and now has many!

How sad to read Mariah Carey's comment: "I love Oprah.... She's one of the few people with the power to change the world." Each person has the power to change the world. They do it every day, but without as much fanfare as Oprah. They are the quiet heroes who care for our sick, discover cures for our illnesses, and house and clothe those in need. You have much to learn about the power of one. It is in those who quietly go about with the knowledge that what they do has the power to change the world.

I noticed that you balanced your profile of Mariah Carey with articles about Peggy Lipton ["Anti-Aging Challenge," April] and Diane Keaton ["Accidental Muse"], two women who have grown to accept themselves and have remained strong and beautiful. I applaud you for letting Mariah tell her story and letting the readers draw their own inferences. I also thank you for providing less-shallow role models.
