On the morning of April 7, school bus driver Michael Weir was taking a load of 27 students to the Arts Academy school in Cleveland, Ohio, when he stopped at a service station, filled his bus with fuel, and went into the restroom--leaving the bus parked with its engine running!
The bus started rolling. Only a few children managed to jump off before it started picking up speed as it rolled down the city's Commercial Road hill. Amidst the excitement on the runaway bus, one student managed to remain calm and take action, 11-year-old David Murphy. At first, David tried to pull the emergency brake, but it failed to stop the bus. When that didn't work, he grabbed the wheel intending to stop the bus by hitting something.
