Early in my music career, I remember the general consensus of my colleagues regarding teaching middle school choirs as a daunting experience and not for the faint of heart. Dealing with the newly raging hormones and hyper-activity stereotypical of the middle school student was more than most of us wanted to endure. But the creator of this DVD, Russell Robinson, presents an opinion of and approach to middle school choirs that are refreshingly positive. It actually changed my mind!
Robinson based the first half of the DVD on a workshop he presented for choral music educators featuring an ongoing dialogue with the educators on several points, which include the uniqueness of the middle school age group, the changing male voice, how to deal with the attention span of the middle school singer, maintaining disciplinary control of the middle school choir through positive reinforcement and so on. Although filmed without a break, it has been digitally divided enabling the viewer to easily find the various topics in a digital Table of Contents.
