Jonathan Cohen, a newcomer to composition, has made a worthwhile contribution to new repertoire for the flute choir. These pieces are meant to be fun for the flute choir to play and entertaining for audiences. Both are scored for a choir of piccolo, four C flutes, alto flute, bass flute and optional contrabass flute.
Flutes and Vegetables (subtitled, "A Recommended Daily Allowance of Dances") is a suite of four dance movements: "Pepper Presto" (1:11), "The Enchanted Eggplant" (1:31), "Sweet Potato Jig" (1:19), and "Dance of the Radishes "(1:21). As suggested by the titles, the music is light and often tongue-in-cheek. Cohen provides descriptions of each movement in notes at the head of the score. Formally, he generally sticks to an ABA design with the A sections melodically dominated by upper voices and the B sections featuring the lower instruments. ...
