U.S. CO2 emissions from energy sources increased by 1.6% in 2007 due to increased electricity demand, a May 2008 preliminary estimate by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows.

Total CO2 emissions from energy sources reached 5,984 million metric tons (mmtCO2) in 2007, a 97 mmtCO2 increase over 2006.
