A flurry of legislative activity in the U.S. Congress this month sought to prolong the life of the original FutureGen project, an experimental IGCC plant proposed for Mattoon, Ill.
The March 2007 agreement between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the FutureGen Alliance, a consortium of 13 energy companies, is set to expire on June 15.
DOE announced in January 2008 its decision to restructure FutureGen project and pull out of a financing consortium for the proposed Mattoon plant.
In making its decision, the DOE noted that it would instead focus on funding several commercial-scale IGCC or other clean coal power plants that utilize carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology.
