High Court quashes bid by MPs to secure FoI get-out
Peter Williams
MPs have lost a key freedom of information battle after the High Court decided that expenses payable to MPs representing constituencies outside London had to be disclosed.
The court refused to overturn an Information Tribunal ruling that the House of Commons should disclose MPs' claims for additional expenses, including for second homes.
The court said it was not addressing the basis of and justification for the expenses system, but interpreting the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act 2000, which expressly includes the Commons among the public authorities to which it applies.
The court's decision backed the earlier tribunal ruling that details of every receipt should be published.
