In a previous issue of Whispering Wind [Green 2007], this author discussed a distinctive style of harness worn as part of early localized Northern Plains grass dance regalia. The article was an updated version of a short piece that first appeared in a much earlier issue of this magazine [Green 1985], which featured a dance harness in the author's collection.
The author felt at the time that such an item of Native dress might well lend itself to being adapted for use on the contemporary Pan-Indian powwow scene. Sure enough, in March 2008, an Oglala Lakota friend of long standing sent photographs of a new grass dance harness she had recently completed, influenced at least in part by the examples illustrated in the above article.
