SINGAPORE, June 2 Asia Pulse - South Korea's defense minister on Saturday called on the international community to join efforts to fight what he called non-traditional security threats in Northeast Asia, such as terrorism and North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons, saying efforts by his country or any other nation alone will not be enough.
"The security of the region at large, in turn, is largely contingent on the security of Korea. In particular, the North Korean nuclear threat has direct and indirect ramifications for not only the Korean peninsula, but also regional stability and world peace," Lee Sang-hee said at a regional defense forum hosted by Britain's International Institute for Strategic Studies.
The 7th Asia Security Summit started here Friday for a three-day run. This year's meeting brought together top defense officials from 26 nations, including U.S. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Japan's defense chief Shigeru Ishiba.
In a keynote address before the plenary session of the annual forum, better known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, the South Korean minister said efforts by one nation to fight the newly emerging security threats "might not be enough."
"Therefore, the nations represented here today must be able and willing to combine their capabilities to meet the threats of tomorrow," he said.
