Four years would pass before Hyde got to come home. By then, Pacific Theater commander Gen. Douglas MacArthur would regard the blood-soaked heroics of Hyde's unit with the highest praise:

"No division with which I have been associated is any closer to my heart than the 24th Division, and none has more distinguished itself."

Slogging through the jungles of New Guinea and the Philippines, the 24th Infantry Division spearheaded five grueling campaigns. But at age 88, Hyde is reluctant to discuss the details of his participation in events triggered by Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.

What Hyde will volunteer is that no amount of bayonet practice could have prepared …
