Report: Crew shortages threaten global trade.(Report)

The shortage of global deck officers could number as high as 34,000 this year and could rise to 90,000 by 2012, according to a new report by Drewry Shipping Consultants.

One of the consequences of the shortfall will be an increasing upward spiral in wages, the London-based consulting firm stated in "Manning 2008 Annual Report," which it published in conjunction with Precious Associates Ltd.
