Sean Hill grew up in Milledgeville, Georgia with stories about his family and the history of the town. But it wasn't until his twenties that the poet went to interview his grandmother and learned that McIntosh Street had once been a thriving Black commercial thoroughfare. His grandmother didn't call it McIntosh. though--she referred to it as people had done back in the day, using the n-word. Her mention of the term startled him.

"I'd never heard her use that word in conversation. It just never came out of her mouth, but she said it in the most unselfconscious way," recalls Hill, who is a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.
