A high intake of folate may reduce the risk of breast cancer in women who consume moderate levels of alcohol, Dr. Shumin M. Zhang of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, and colleagues reported.

Their findings are based on an analysis of blood samples obtained in 1989 and 1990 from 32,286 women aged 43-69 years in the ongoing Nurses' Health Study. The researchers compared folate levels in 712 breast cancer cases with those of 712 controls.

Among women who consumed an average of 15 g of alcohol (approximately one drink) per day, those with the highest plasma folate concentrations were 89% less likely to develop breast cancer than those with the lowest ...
