The best available evidence is insufficient to determine whether estrogen or estrogenprogestin therapy affects the risk of ovarian cancer, Dr. Terry Mahotiere said in a poster session at the annual meeting of the American College of Preventive Medicine.
That's the conclusion she reached after conducting a literature review on the possible association between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and ovarian cancer for the United States Preventive Services Task Force to assist them in their assessment of the potential harms and benefits of HRT.
Dr. Mahotiere, who conducted the review of the literature during her residency in General Preventive Medicine/Public Health at the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine, used the PubMed database to review studies between January 1966 and August 2002 that have examined the association between HRT use and ovarian cancer.
The review was limited to studies published in English language journals and indexed in the PubMed database.
