Two case reports from Georgia serve as sobering reminders that physicians should be vigilant about making sure that pregnant vegetarians are getting enough cobalamin (vitamin B12) in their diets.
In the first case, a girl aged 15 months was hospitalized in August 2001 after her pediatrician diagnosed her with failure to thrive, developmental delay and severe macrocytic anemia. Cobalamin deficiency was diagnosed during hospitalization. The girl's mother had reported being on a vegan diet during the preceding 7 years (MMWR 52[04]:61-4, 2003).
