SIR: I enjoyed reading Mervyn F. Bendle's cogent review (March 2008) of Ben Kiernan's history of genocide, Blood and Soil. Mr Bendle is absolutely correct in stating that the contemporary growth in "genocide studies" has ignored genocides and massacres carried out by non-Western peoples against each other, and has ignored the truly horrifying and barbaric nature of the societies which Europeans encountered in the Third World. This state of affairs is the result of the potency of the Myth of the Noble Savage, so prevalent in Western thought since the eighteenth century, and by the contemporary dominance of the curious field of "genocide studies" by the ideological Left, with its core hatred of the West.
