Shimmering bronze cheeks, rich copper lips, sage green lids: This season, makeup colors inspired by the desert shift out of neutral and into something far more seductive.
The sultriest makeup colors now could have been designed by the Arizona Office of Tourism: the green of the saguaro (for lids), the terra-cotta of the rocks (for cheeks), and the copper of the sunsets (for lips). "These are the colors of sun and earth and nature," says makeup artist Fulvia Farolfi, who created the looks on these pages.
Earth tones had their glory days in the '80s, and the idea was to telegraph natural beauty--but in reality, the makeup itself tended to be thick, matte, and deadly on the skin. The new earthy colors, however, aren't at all muddy. They contain hints of warmth, in the form of pink or peach tones, or a dose of fine shimmer for a metallic edge. Either way, they're actually quite sexy, in an understated way.
Even if you're a city kid with no idea where the mesquite meets the Mojave, these vibrant desert-inspired shades are a welcome reprieve from the predictable red lips and black eyes you've been swabbing on forever. A khaki green on your eyelids may seem jarring, says makeup artist Chrisanne Davis, "but with beautiful, glowing skin and nude lips, it can look neutral and pretty."
Just watch out for the sidewinders.
